What to do when a relationship ends

by anna on July 14th, 2007

Michael left a comment on the post How to Overcome Negative Thoughts which I wanted to respond to, as he is feeling low from his girlfriend finishing their relationship.

Any loss is difficult to deal with and much depends on the circumstances but here are some thoughts for you, Michael.

  • Each Sunday I host a positive thinking carnival to help you come through the depression and turn your life around so well worth checking it out.
  • Relationships can be painful when they come to an end, but always remember that many people don’t ever get to feel the power of love….feel proud you have tasted the feeling of love. Think about what you have gained from the experience rather than what you have lost.
  • A relationship is about 2 people and if one is not happy, for whatever reason…it really is better to find that out now before you make a life time commitment.
  • It feels at the moment that you will never get over the pain - but you will, we all do with time. To help heal the pain - make sure that you start thinking of the future. Write down 3 things that you really want to do, or achieve in the next couple of months. You need to “trick” your mind to think about the future not the past.
  • Look after your body, it is going through pain. Eat healthily, exercise and get plenty of sleep - all of these help you overcome the pain quicker. It is like physiotherapy for the heart!
  • Try and talk to her, understand how she came to the decision so that you can put an end to this chapter in your life.
  • Don’t punish yourself by leaving loads of memento’s around the house - if you want to keep them, put them away out of sight.
  • Understand that this is a chapter in your life, but there are many more to come….enjoy the memories but realise that life is about living and the future now.
  • Understand that this is a relationship that has ended not you - write down your best 5 points and keep reading them. This relationship did not work but it certainly does not mean that you as a person, as a lover, as a boyfriend is lacking in some way. Keep reminding yourself you are a good person with great attributes and one day you will find the person who loves you for just being you.
