Quotes on Grief

by anna on January 17th, 2008

I am in a thoughtful mood today, I don’t know why. In grief you enter so many different stages of bereavement that I now don’t think about it, I just accept it. I have collected a few thoughts on the pain of grief and thought I would share them here in the hope that they will help you today. If you have a quote then please leave them in the comments section as words seem to really help me on those days when loneliness seems to be gripping my body.

Carl Jung “There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year’s course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word ‘happy’ would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.”
Colette “I love my past. I love my present. I’m not ashamed of what I’ve had, and I’m not sad because I have it no longer.”
Henri Nouwen “When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares”
Kahlil Gibran “.. joy and sorrow are inseparable. . . together they come and when one sits alone with you . . . remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.”
Robert Frost “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.”
Robert Fulghum “I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge — myth is more potent than history — dreams are more powerful than facts — hope always triumphs over experience — laughter is the cure for grief — love is stronger than death.”

Hi Anna! Great blog and great writing. I too lost my spouse Joanne to cancer back in August of 2005. We had 9 children together and I’m raising them with some help. I found your blog while submitting some of my own posts (sales and life coaching) on my own site. Just wanted to say Hi and keep going. People need to read this kind of stuff to get through it all. :) God Bless.

Rich - all I can say is 9 children! I expect that they give you comfort as Joanne must live on through them…I am sure she would be very proud…and together let’s help others to get through their grief. Thanks for commenting
