Widows Quest

If you didn’t get to say goodbye….

by anna on September 19th, 2006

Sometimes our loved ones are taken away before we can say goodbye. This is often the hardest thing to cope with in many ways. My friend lost her brother in a car accident and she decided to write a letter to him. I asked her if I could share that with you, here it is

 To my mad baby brother,

I will remember the moment that the police arrived at our door, it was as though somebody had taken every ounce of life from my body too. I know we fought - but hey we were just teenagers, and I hope you know that I didn’t mean the words I said in anger. I now regret that I never got to tell you that you were the most special brother a girl could ever have wished for….I love you and I know that you loved me. Last night, I heard you in your bedroom….people will think I am strange as I know you are no longer here, but I know that you were just checking that we were OK. Please know that you may have left this world but you will never leave my heart. My tears reflect the loss, but in time the tears will be replaced with smiles at how you made me laugh, how you made me mad, how you made me love.

I maybe didn’t get to say goodbye but I want to say that now. I want to say thank you for being my friend and my brother. Look after Nan in heaven, don’t play your music too loud - you know she would hate that! ……and remember this world was a special place for having you in it. The world’s loss is heaven’s gain

This helped my friend a great deal, and she continues to write a letter and put it on his grave each year……for the last 20 years. If you didn’t get the chance to say goodbye then try writing a letter and telling them everything that you wished you had said…..and say goodbye and thank you for being in your life.
