How do we remember our loved ones?

by anna on May 21st, 2008

I was speaking to someone this week who was unsure about whether to buy a gravestone. It made me think about how we remember people. My friend’s issue was that a gravestone seemed cold, seemed bleak and I can understand her feelings. rosesfromtop.jpg

I actually chose to plant a tree and flowers as for me, this was more about celebrating the life. Almost as one life dies, another begins

What are your thoughts? Do you favour more of a memorial, or do you like the tradition of the gravestone?

I am so sorry to read about your loss. One thing that has helped me since we lost Natasha to a horrific murder is I have memorial keepsakes of her. I bought memorial jewelry that I wear in her memory so I can talk about her when someone comments on my jewelry. I have also planted a memorial garden with a water pond. The task at first seemed huge and expensive but I found a lot of affordable memorial statues and memorial jewelry here at Memorial Jewelry and Statues. They have affordable memorial items, urns, plaques, and statues that can be so expensive if purchased from a funeral home. We could barely afford to bury our sweet Natasha so I know how hard it can be. You and your family are in our prayers during this difficult time.

my five year old son drowned on June 8th of this year. We chose a BEAUTIFUL headstone…..I too thought it “cold”….marble is just that.
We got bronze…we were able to choose 4 pictures….and the pictures on the stone look more real than even the shots themselves. I was amazed. Its not in yet, Ive just seen the computer generated samples, but I cant wait. I know that when I visit him, I’ll be able to look upon his smiling face while we spend our time together.
Ive also bought a necklace from a jewerly store, they do an awesome job, the picture is lazered on so that it is in color and as if your wearing the snapshot literally around your neck.
I have a small locket with a snip of his hair…..Ive ordered his flowers from his funeral preserved and included photo’s and a few of his little trucks he liked to play with…..I also got a snowglobe (he loved those at christmas) that has a little tree in it with an inscription…..and on the outside I got to choose a nice engraving.
Ive gone a bit nuts with the memory things….but I want to be surrounded.
A friend of mine also got a blanket made at walmart with his photo….it turned out beautifully. There are TONS of options for you….and the places that do the headstones will work with you. We couldnt afford it right now and are having to wait on our sons life insurance to come in…..but they put things on the roll and will take their payment from his policy…they have even decided to donate a memorial…..(smaller or course) to the local baseball park where he played….we will be having a dedication ceremony for it.
