Widows Quest

Gifts for someone who is grieving..

by anna on February 21st, 2008

I often get asked what to send to people who are grieving after a recent bereavement. There are no hard and fast rules that work for everyone but I would share these thoughts

  1. Don’t be afraid of sending something. The fact that you have taken the time and thought about it, means so much to a widow or widower.
  2. I think words are a wonderful gift. Words are universal and I know with me, I have reread them many times during the grief process.
  3. Personalized gifts are important. What is important to them, what would show that you are thinking about them…I remember someone sending me a wonderful card, a candle, bubble bath and a photo -the message said something like - No words can help and I know memories will be very special to you. So run a candle lit bath, put your favorite photo in the frame, cry..and remember. Then ring me and let me be there for you….
  4. It is not about the cost it is about the meaning. thankunote.jpg
  5. Time is a wonderful gift to give people.
  6. Think about the medium term not just the short term, gifts a few weeks later can be wonderful.

What is the best gift that you have received? What advice would you share? Do you agree it is the personal nature of the gift that means the most?
