Don’t forget to celebrate life

by anna on September 7th, 2006

I remember the moment my dad took his last breath, it was Bonfire Night in the UK - a night when families get together and have firework displays. It seemed so apt that fireworks were shooting into the sky, almost as if they were giving him a police escort to heaven!

But it also acted as a reminder to me. Often when we suffer loss we concentrate on the sadness of not seeing our loved ones, or the sense of emptiness…..not surprisingly. But don’t forget to celebrate their life. Their life was precious, they brought a uniqueness to this world and also you were lucky enough to know them. Mixed with the tears of happiness can be tears of joy at the pleasure they have brought, the love they have shared, the way they lit up your life.

My Dad was a family man and a week before he died he said to me ” Anna, don’t be sad. I have loved every minute on this earth….I have travelled more than I could have wished for, borne 2 children who have made me so proud, loved one woman - your mum - who loved me back unconditionally. What is there to be sad about, I have lived a life full of memories and love. When I go, make sure you celebrate the memories, celebrate what you felt I brought to this world, and remember I am not dying….no, my heart has just run out of love to give and needs a rest”

I hope this helps you to think about the greatness of life, the magic one person brings to this world. Personally, my Dad’s words helped me very much - what a lovely thought….a heart that needs a rest after all the love it has given.
