Algarve Tragedy
My heartfelt thoughts go out to Rosie Fry, 11, and her brother George, nine, lost their parents, Deb and Bob, while Alex Dinsmore, nine, and his sister Lydia, 11, lost their mum Jean. The parents drowned whilst saving their children from treacherous currents off the Portuguese coast. The Daily Mail reports
“Off-duty lifeguard, Daniel Salvaterra, 33, who runs a surf school at the Algarve resort of Praia do Tonel where the holidaymakers died, described how he tried to stop the group of seven children wading into the water.
He said: “I saw the children playing out in the currents. The water wasn’t very deep, just up to their waists. But I went out and told them it was dangerous and they came back to the beach.
“Fifteen minutes later I was just heading up the hill to my car - and saw the children had gone back in and were in trouble. Their parents were running to try and help them.”
I just cannot imagine the effect on the children - the key will be getting them to talk about their feelings and ensuring that they don’t blame themselves….
